1M Shared Context
Input, thinking, and generated output share one 1,048,576-token window. Budget all three together when sizing prompts and responses.
Chat, coding agents & document work. Priced per 1M tokens — input, cached input and output are billed separately. GPTProto is 40% below official rates.
| Scenario | Google list | OpenRouter | GPTProto | You save / mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal10M tokens / mo (4.8M cached) | $53.76 | $56.72 | $32.26 | −$21.50≈ $258.05 / yr |
| Team100M tokens / mo (48M cached) | $537.60 | $567.17 | $322.56 | −$215.04≈ $2580.48 / yr |
| Business500M tokens / mo (240M cached) | $2688.00 | $2835.84 | $1612.80 | −$1075.20≈ $12902.40 / yr |
Gemini 4 Argon is Google's flagship reasoning model for difficult coding, agentic, mathematical, scientific, and enterprise knowledge tasks. It combines a shared 1M-token context window, configurable thinking levels, and long decode. This parent page covers text-to-text API use; image, video, audio, and file inputs have separate task pages.
1M Shared Context
Input, thinking, and generated output share one 1,048,576-token window. Budget all three together when sizing prompts and responses.
Long Decode for Large Outputs
Use background execution and continuation for outputs beyond 65,536 tokens, up to the unused portion of the shared 1M-token window.
Low, Medium, or High Thinking
Choose low, medium, or high reasoning depth. Medium is the default; higher levels trade additional latency and token use for harder tasks.
Tools and Structured Results
Build workflows with function calling, structured output, code execution, file search, URL context, search grounding, and preview computer-use support.
The Gemini 4 Argon API provides programmatic access to Google's stable Gemini 4 reasoning model for complex software engineering, autonomous agents, deep research, and scientific or enterprise knowledge work. It is a proprietary hosted model, not an open-source or downloadable-weight release.
Its 1,048,576-token allowance is unified: prompt, thinking, and output tokens consume the same window. More input therefore leaves less room for reasoning and generation. Long decode must be configured for output beyond the standard per-request limit.

| Long decode | Up to the unused portion of the 1M-token window through continuation/background execution |
| Thinking levels | low, medium (default), high |
| Context caching | Implicit caching only; explicit caching is not supported |
| Agent features | Function calling, structured outputs, code execution, file search, URL context, and grounding |
| Other official input types | Image, video, audio, and PDF; routed to dedicated GPTProto task pages below |
| Not supported | Image generation, audio generation, and the Live API |
The limit is not 1M input plus 1M output. A large repository or document collection reduces the space available for reasoning and generation, so applications should record total usage rather than prompt length alone. For normal requests, use a bounded output and the lowest thinking level that passes evaluation. Reserve background execution or continuation for genuinely long tasks.
Repository-scale coding: Inspect architecture, dependencies, tests, and cross-file behavior before producing a migration plan or patch.
Long-horizon agents: Combine function calls, structured state, and plan-execute-check loops that can recover from failed steps.
Enterprise analysis: Process extensive evidence for financial, legal, compliance, or operational research, with citations or structured fields for review.
Math and science: Apply high thinking to difficult problems, while retaining external validation for calculations and conclusions.
Google's October 2026 model card reports mixed results, not a universal winner. Argon leads several coding, knowledge-work, and long-context tests; Astra and Opus lead other software, science, or terminal-agent evaluations.
| Evaluation | Gemini 4 Argon | GPT-6 Astra | Claude Opus 5.5 | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DeepSWE v1.1 | 77.9% | 74.1% | 74.2% | Argon led this agentic coding evaluation |
| FrontierSWE v2 | 55.0% | 65.5% | 62.3% | Astra led the frontier software task set |
| Terminal-bench 4.0 | 57.4% | 58.2% | 66.4% | Opus led terminal-based agent tasks |
| Vals Index | 68.9% | 63.1% | 67.0% | Argon led the reported knowledge-work index |
| GraphWalks 256K–1M | 84.2% | 71.8% | 66.8% | Argon showed the strongest very-long-context result |
| LABBench 2 | 88.8% | 85.4% | 73.1% | Argon led this reported science evaluation |
These are provider-reported results, not GPTProto testing. Shortlist with the table, then compare identical prompts, tools, timeouts, and acceptance tests. Favor Argon when shared 1M context, deep code analysis, or long structured output matters most.
The model accepts multiple input types and returns text. Keep this parent page for text-to-text calls and route multimodal intent to the focused child pages below.
| Input task | Dedicated page | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Image to text | Gemini 4 Argon Image-to-Text API | Screenshots, charts, product images, diagrams, and OCR-assisted analysis |
| Video to text | Gemini 4 Argon Video-to-Text API | Video summaries, event extraction, scene analysis, and agentic video understanding |
| File to text | Gemini 4 Argon File-to-Text API | PDF and document analysis, evidence extraction, and long-file synthesis |
| Audio to text | Gemini 4 Argon Audio-to-Text API | Spoken-content analysis, meeting review, and audio question answering |
Each child page should link back here and to relevant sibling routes, keeping all four task pages out of orphan status.
Switching the model name alone is not enough. Check these differences before routing production traffic:
Use the exact stable model ID gemini-4-argon.
Treat 1,048,576 tokens as one combined input-thinking-output budget, not separate limits.
Replace legacy thinking_budget logic with thinking_level: low, medium, or high.
Remove explicit cache creation or cached_content references. Argon supports implicit caching, not explicit context caching.
Remove temperature, top_p, and top_k assumptions; Google's Argon API ignores these sampling controls.
Plan background execution and continuation beyond 65,536 output tokens.
Increase timeouts for difficult requests and test tool schemas, structured outputs, and retry behavior before full rollout.
When moving from Google's native API to GPTProto, use the parameter names in GPTProto's documentation. Do not assume every Google SDK field maps directly to an OpenAI-compatible body.
Choose Argon for broad text context, deep reasoning, codebase analysis, structured tool use, or very long output. Use a faster, cheaper model for short classification, routing, extraction, or high-volume chat. Start with low or medium thinking and move to high only when evaluation shows a measurable gain.
