Build with DeepSeek's current Flash model for repository-scale coding, long-document analysis, structured output, tool calls, and native image understanding. The model supports up to 1M tokens of context, up to 384K output, and thinking or non-thinking operation. For image extraction and visual prompt guidance, use the DeepSeek Flash Image-to-Text API.
Native Vision and 1M Context
Process text, screenshots, charts, scanned pages, and long documents in one request, with native image understanding and a context window of up to one million tokens.
Efficient CED Architecture
The 552B-parameter MoE activates 8B parameters during prefill and 16B during generation, reducing compute and KV-cache requirements for input-heavy workloads.
Adjustable Reasoning Effort
Use thinking mode for difficult coding and agent tasks or non-thinking mode for routine work, then tune reasoning effort around quality, latency, and token use.
Tool-Ready Agent Workflows
Combine tool calls, JSON output, streaming, and long conversation state for agents that inspect repositories, analyze visual evidence, call functions, and continue across multiple steps.
The DeepSeek Flash API uses the exact deepseek-flash model string to access DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. Released on September 10, 2026, this multimodal Mixture-of-Experts model accepts text and images and generates text. It replaces the retired V4 Flash and V4 Flash Vision experimental models behind their legacy aliases.
Its 40-layer Causal Encoder-Decoder architecture has 20 encoder and 20 decoder layers. The 552B-parameter backbone activates 8B parameters per token during prefill and 16B during decode. DeepSeek reports an 890-byte global KV cache per token—about one quarter of V4 Flash—and a persistent footprint about one eighth as large. The design targets input-heavy agents and long-document workflows.
GPTProto lists the model at its standard rate, so this page does not claim a discount. Its advantage is consolidated access: one key and balance can test it alongside 200+ alternatives and configure fallbacks without separate provider accounts.

deepseek-flash is the API model string; DeepSeek V4.1 Flash is the version currently served by that route. They are not separate tiers, so this page also answers searches for “deepseek-v4.1-flash API” without presenting that phrase as a second request identifier.
| Name | Role | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|
deepseek-flash |
Current API model string | Use in GPTProto requests after confirming the dashboard value |
| DeepSeek V4.1 Flash | Current underlying model version | Use in page copy, evaluation reports, and release references |
deepseek-v4-flash |
Retired-model compatibility alias | Migrate new integrations to deepseek-flash |
deepseek-v4-flash-vision-exp |
Retired vision-experiment alias | Migrate visual workflows to deepseek-flash |
Do not infer a versioned API string from the release name. Keep deepseek-flash in configuration and record the resolved version in evaluation logs.
V4.1 consolidates general Flash and experimental vision access into one multimodal route. Its asymmetric CED design uses fewer active parameters for input than output, while CSA2 attention and compressed KV caching reduce the memory footprint of long prompts. DeepSeek also expanded agent-oriented post-training.
Before migrating an existing V4 Flash application, test response parsing, tool arguments, reasoning fields, latency, and token use. Compatibility aliases no longer identify the retired models they originally referenced.
Repository-scale coding: Combine relevant source files, specifications, logs, and test output for cross-file analysis, migration planning, debugging, patch drafting, and review.
Long-document analysis: Review specifications, contracts, reports, transcripts, or support histories with more source material in context. Focus the prompt and cap the output.
Multi-step agents: Use tool calls, structured output, and streaming to inspect data, call functions, evaluate results, and revise a plan. Your application still executes tools and enforces permissions.
Image-aware workflows: Connect screenshots, charts, diagrams, or scanned pages with written context. For OCR-style extraction, visual question answering, and task-specific image limits, continue to the DeepSeek Flash Image-to-Text API.
DeepSeek currently lists deepseek-flash and deepseek-v4-pro as separate active APIs. It reversed a planned V4 Pro phase-out and continues that service after September 14, 2026. Evaluate both with your actual prompts, tools, limits, and acceptance tests.

These are DeepSeek-reported results at maximum reasoning effort, not independent GPTProto tests. Flash led these agentic evaluations, while V4 Pro led some knowledge and reasoning tests in the same model card. No single score establishes universal superiority.
Thinking mode is enabled by default in DeepSeek's native API. There, temperature, presence_penalty, and frequency_penalty have no effect; top_p is at least 0.95 in thinking mode and fixed at 1.0 otherwise. Confirm GPTProto's exposed controls before publishing code.
For thinking-mode requests with tools, DeepSeek requires prior reasoning_content in subsequent requests or its native API returns a 400 error. Verify GPTProto's handling, validate tool arguments, restrict permissions, and set step, token, and timeout limits.
Choose DeepSeek Flash for native visual input, repository-scale context, long output, coding-oriented reasoning, or repeated tool use. Suitable workloads include screenshot-assisted debugging, technical-document analysis, codebase migration, and stateful agents.
For short classification, routing, or rewriting, compare a smaller model. For difficult tasks, run the same evaluation through another option in the GPTProto model directory and compare quality, latency, token use, and recovery.
